Self-determination refers to the ability of individuals to make choices and have control over their own lives. In the context of supporting students with visual impairment, this concept is particularly important as it empowers students to advocate for their own needs, preferences, and interests. When students are self-determined, they can set personal goals, make decisions about their education and future, and pursue opportunities that align with their values and aspirations. This empowerment is crucial for fostering independence, confidence, and a sense of agency among students with visual impairments, allowing them to navigate their environments and experiences in a meaningful way.

The ability to complete tasks independently, while important, is not the crux of self-determination. Similarly, following instructions accurately and replicating peer behaviors do not encapsulate the essence of making personal choices and exercising control over one’s life, which are central to self-determination.
